When a light is incident on a surface, some amount of light is reflected and transmitted. The reflection and transmission can be very complex if very thin film is coated on the surface because the reflected light interferes with the incident light. Sometimes this complex phenomenon gives us a benefit. Light can be transmitted or blocked using thin films on a surface. For example, sunglass blocks UV light but transmits visible light. The transmitted color can vary depending on the refractive index and thickness of the thin film.
Proper materials should be stacked with proper thickness in order to get useful reflection characteristics. "Reflectance Calculator" calculates reflectance and transmittance to make you choose proper materials with proper thickness.
